THIRTY-NINE

“Given what we now know, we can’t possibly let anyone take Ben away and lock him up,” Carol said.

“It appears that we were wrong,” Daisy agreed. “He really was just a dumb kid playing around with stuff he didn’t understand. But I no longer believe that he is a murderer.”

“Which is what I’ve been trying to tell you all along,” Chad said through clenched teeth. “I can’t believe I might’ve lost the first real relationship I’ve had in years over this. I only hope that Kiera will forgive me.”

“You can hardly blame us for thinking it was Ben, under the circumstances,” Decker said. “Especially given the history of this town and the loup-garou.”

“Two different werewolves running around at the same time.” Carol shook her head. “It doesn’t bear thinking about.”

“I’ll call off the Ghost Team just as soon as I get back to the guesthouse,” Daisy said. “They weren’t due here until morning, so they probably haven’t been dispatched yet.”

“Thank you.” A look of relief passed across Chad’s face.

Daisy acknowledged his thanks with a brief nod of her head. “But I’m going to recommend that we keep Ben under surveillance, at least for now. Killer or not, he was dabbling with black magic, and we need to make sure that he doesn’t do so again.”

“How are you going to do that?” Chad asked. “Send some of those Ghost Team goons to our town on permanent assignment?”

“Nothing so heavy-handed. But we will be here, watching. At least for a while.”

Chad’s face dropped. Clearly, the thought of Decker’s new employer keeping members of his town under surveillance did not appeal. “There’s no need for your organization to become officially involved. I’ll vouch for the boy.”

Daisy turned to him. “With all due respect, Sheriff Hardwick, it was your inattentiveness that allowed your girlfriend’s son to steal the spell book in the first place. Even worse, he took it from your evidence locker using copies of your keys. I hardly think you’re the best person to keep him in line going forward.”

“Carol could keep an eye on the boy,” Decker said, mostly as a compromise. “She won’t let us down. I’d trust her with my life.”

Carol beamed at Decker. “Flattery will get you everywhere.”

Daisy shook her head. “I don’t like it.”

Chad looked at Decker with narrowed eyes. “I thought this young woman was your associate.”

“She is,” Decker replied.

“Well, she’s acting more like your boss.”

“She’s that, too. And don’t bother asking for an explanation, because I’m not giving you one. It’s complicated.”

Chad shook his head. “It always is with you, John.”

“Boys, that’s enough! Can we get back to the matter at hand?” Carol said. “I really don’t mind watching over Ben, and I think it will be less intrusive than an outsider.”

Decker looked at Daisy. “She’s right. This is the best solution all around. It will be less complicated, and I don’t mind being her point of contact. If Ben so much as steps an inch out of line, we’ll know about it.”

“Very well.” Daisy let out a deep sigh.
